Hondo by Louis L'Amour

I’ve known of Louis L’amour my whole life. And I’m ashamed to say this is only my second Louis L’amour novel to read. I don’t remember the name of the first one I read but I think it was a Sackett novel.

Hondo is a classic western novel and movie starring the one and only John Wayne. I just finished reading the book last night and watched the movie this evening. Both are very close together as far as how the book reads and how the movie plays out. But the book is one of a kind. As I read it I thought a lot about the writing style and it almost seemed like he just wrote what came to his head instead of having an outline. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it’s my opinion.

I loved the honesty of Hondo and his dog, Sam as well as the Apache Vittoro. We need more people like Hondo and Vittoro in this world today. I also loved the descriptions of the land as well. As you read it I could picture myself being out in the Arizona desert riding my horse and fighting off Apaches and white men as well.

I am definitely going to be digging deeper in the Louis L’Amour novels soon.
