The first chapter of this book is one of the best things I’ve ever read. It’s beautiful. Most of the book is really good as well. It’s fiction but it as you read this you think that this is a true story. It’s told in the first person like the author is telling his story from his time in Vietnam. Anyone wanting to learn about how soldiers lived and what they did in Vietnam please pick up this book.
As I read the first chapter and even afterI thought about what I carried in combat.
Three things come to mind other than the standard issued uniform, rifle, ammo, helmet and bullet proof vest. I carried my dog tags in my pocket and intertwined in them was a lot of religious tokens I kept on me. I also carried a small note pad that I kept in my pocket. I always wrote notes on it while I was deployed. I remember writing my life goals on it and I can say that I have accomplished most of them other than climbing a mountain. I’ve since lost that notebook and it’s one of the possessions I wish I had back. The third thing I always tried to keep with me was a book. I always tried to keep a paper back with me so I could read in our down time.
